Itwasteno’clockinthemorningwhenthecanoereachedasecondangleoftheMercy,nearlyfivemilesfromitsmouth.Hereahaltwasmadeforbreakfastundertheshadeofsomesplendidtrees.Theriverstillmeasuredfromsixtytoseventyfeetinbreadth,anditsbedfromfivetosixfeetindepth.Theengineerhadobservedthatitwasincreasedbynumerousaffluents,buttheywereunnavigable,beingsimplylittlestreams.Astotheforest,includingJacamarWood,aswellastheforestsoftheFarWest,itextendedasfarastheeyecouldreach.Innoplace,eitherinthedepthsoftheforestsorunderthetreesonthebanksoftheMercy,wasthepresenceofmanrevealed.Theexplorerscouldnotdiscoveronesuspicioustrace.Itwasevidentthatthewoodman’saxehadnevertouchedthesetrees,thatthepioneer’sknifehadneverseveredthecreepershangingfromonetrunktoanotherinthemidstoftangledbrushwoodandlonggrass.Ifcastawayshadlandedontheisland,theycouldnothaveyetquittedtheshore,anditwasnotinthewoodsthatthesurvivorsofthesupposedshipwreckshouldbesought.
TheengineerthereforemanifestedsomeimpatiencetoreachthewesterncoastofLincolnIsland,whichwasatleastfivemilesdistantaccordingtohisestimation.
Thevoyagewascontinued,andastheMercyappearedtoflownottowardstheshore,butrathertowardsMountFranklin,itwasdecidedthattheyshouldusetheboataslongastherewasenoughwaterunderitskeeltofloatit.
