           Thenightpassedaway.Towardsfiveo’clockinthemorningofthe25thofMarch,theskybegantolighten;thehorizonstillremaineddark,butwithdaybreakathickmistrosefromthesea,sothattheeyecouldscarcelypenetratebeyondtwentyfeetorsofromwheretheystood.Atlengththefoggraduallyunrolleditselfingreatheavilymovingwaves.

           Itwasunfortunate,however,thatthecastawayscoulddistinguishnothingaroundthem.WhilethegazeofthereporterandNebwerecastupontheocean,thesailorandHerbertlookedeagerlyforthecoastinthewest.Butnotaspeckoflandwasvisible.
