           Perhapsintimethesettlerscouldreplacethiswantbysomeequivalent,itwaspossiblethattheymightfindthesagoorthebreadfruittreeamongtheforestsofthesouth,buttheyhadnotasyetmetwiththeseprecioustrees.However,Providencecamedirectlytotheiraid,inaninfinitesimalproportionitistrue,butCyrusHarding,withallhisintelligence,allhisingenuity,wouldneverhavebeenabletoproducethatwhich,bythegreatestchance,Herbertonedayfoundintheliningofhiswaistcoat,whichhewasoccupiedinsettingtorights.

           Onthisday,asitwasrainingintorrents,thesettlerswereassembledinthegreathallinGraniteHouse,whentheladcriedoutallatonce,—

           "Lookhere,captain—Agrainofcorn!"

           Andheshowedhiscompanionsagrain—asinglegrain—whichfromaholeinhispockethadgotintotheliningofhiswaistcoat.
