           Matthew,withasuspiciousmoistureinhiseyes,gotupandwentout-of-doors.Underthestarsofthebluesummernighthewalkedagitatedlyacrosstheyardtothegateunderthepoplars.

           “Wellnow,Iguesssheain’tbeenmuchspoiled,”hemuttered,proudly.“Iguessmyputtinginmyoaroccasionalneverdidmuchharmafterall.She’ssmartandpretty,andloving,too,whichisbetterthanalltherest.She’sbeenablessingtous,andthereneverwasaluckiermistakethanwhatMrs.Spencermade—ifitwasluck.Idon’tbelieveitwasanysuchthing.ItwasProvidence,becausetheAlmightysawweneededher,Ireckon.”

           ThedayfinallycamewhenAnnemustgototown.SheandMatthewdroveinonefineSeptembermorning,afteratearfulpartingwithDianaandanuntearfulpracticalone—onMarilla’ssideatleast—withMarilla.ButwhenAnnehadgoneDianadriedhertearsandwenttoabeachpicnicatWhiteSandswithsomeofherCarmodycousins,whereshecontrivedtoenjoyherselftolerablywell;whileMarillaplungedfiercelyintounnecessaryworkandkeptatitalldaylongwiththebitterestkindofheartache—theachethatburnsandgnawsandcannotwashitselfawayinreadytears.
