Mrs.RachelLyndelivedjustwheretheAvonleamainroaddippeddownintoalittlehollow,fringedwithaldersandladies’eardropsandtraversedbyabrookthathaditssourceawaybackinthewoodsoftheoldCuthbertplace;itwasreputedtobeanintricate,headlongbrookinitsearliercoursethroughthosewoods,withdarksecretsofpoolandcascade;butbythetimeitreachedLynde’sHollowitwasaquiet,well-conductedlittlestream,fornotevenabrookcouldrunpastMrs.RachelLynde’sdoorwithoutdueregardfordecencyanddecorum;itprobablywasconsciousthatMrs.Rachelwassittingatherwindow,keepingasharpeyeoneverythingthatpassed,frombrooksandchildrenup,andthatifshenoticedanythingoddoroutofplaceshewouldneverrestuntilshehadferretedoutthewhysandwhereforesthereof.
ThereareplentyofpeopleinAvonleaandoutofit,whocanattendcloselytotheirneighbor’sbusinessbydintofneglectingtheirown;butMrs.RachelLyndewasoneofthosecapablecreatureswhocanmanagetheirownconcernsandthoseofotherfolksintothebargain.Shewasanotablehousewife;herworkwasalwaysdoneandwelldone;she“ran”theSewingCircle,helpedruntheSunday-school,andwasthestrongestpropoftheChurchAidSocietyandForeignMissionsAuxiliary.YetwithallthisMrs.
