           AnnehadbeenafortnightatGreenGablesbeforeMrs.Lyndearrivedtoinspecther.Mrs.Rachel,todoherjustice,wasnottoblameforthis.AsevereandunseasonableattackofgrippehadconfinedthatgoodladytoherhouseeversincetheoccasionofherlastvisittoGreenGables.Mrs.Rachelwasnotoftensickandhadawell-definedcontemptforpeoplewhowere;butgrippe,sheasserted,waslikenootherillnessonearthandcouldonlybeinterpretedasoneofthespecialvisitationsofProvidence.Assoonasherdoctorallowedhertoputherfootout-of-doorsshehurrieduptoGreenGables,burstingwithcuriositytoseeMatthewandMarilla’sorphan,concerningwhomallsortsofstoriesandsuppositionshadgoneabroadinAvonlea.

           Annehadmadegooduseofeverywakingmomentofthatfortnight.Alreadyshewasacquaintedwitheverytreeandshrubabouttheplace.Shehaddiscoveredthatalaneopenedoutbelowtheappleorchardandranupthroughabeltofwoodland;andshehadexploredittoitsfurthestendinallitsdeliciousvagariesofbrookandbridge,fircoppiceandwildcherryarch,cornersthickwithfern,andbranchingbywaysofmapleandmountainash.

           Shehadmadefriendswiththespringdowninthehollow—thatwonderfuldeep,clearicy-coldspring;itwassetaboutwithsmoothredsandstonesandrimmedinbygreatpalm-likeclumpsofwaterfern;andbeyonditwasalogbridgeoverthebrook.
