           AnneandtherestoftheAvonleascholarsreachedtownjustintimetohurryofftotheAcademy.Thatfirstdaypassedpleasantlyenoughinawhirlofexcitement,meetingallthenewstudents,learningtoknowtheprofessorsbysightandbeingassortedandorganizedintoclasses.AnneintendedtakinguptheSecondYearworkbeingadvisedtodosobyMissStacy;GilbertBlytheelectedtodothesame.ThismeantgettingaFirstClassteacher’slicenseinoneyearinsteadoftwo,iftheyweresuccessful;butitalsomeantmuchmoreandharderwork.Jane,Ruby,Josie,Charlie,andMoodySpurgeon,notbeingtroubledwiththestirringsofambition,werecontenttotakeuptheSecondClasswork.Annewasconsciousofapangoflonelinesswhenshefoundherselfinaroomwithfiftyotherstudents,notoneofwhomsheknew,exceptthetall,brown-hairedboyacrosstheroom;andknowinghiminthefashionshedid,didnothelphermuch,asshereflectedpessimistically.Yetshewasundeniablygladthattheywereinthesameclass;theoldrivalrycouldstillbecarriedon,andAnnewouldhardlyhaveknownwhattodoifithadbeenlacking.
