           WhenAnne,withtearsrollingoverhercheeks,hadgonesorrowfullyupstairs,Matthew,whohadbeenapparentlysoundasleepontheloungeduringthewholedialogue,openedhiseyesandsaiddecidedly:

           “Wellnow,Marilla,IthinkyououghttoletAnnego.”

           “Idon’tthen,”retortedMarilla.“Who’sbringingthischildup,Matthew,youorme?”

           “Wellnow,you,”admittedMatthew.

           “Don’tinterferethen.”

           “Wellnow,Iain’tinterfering.Itain’tinterferingtohaveyourownopinion.AndmyopinionisthatyououghttoletAnnego.”

           “You’dthinkIoughttoletAnnegotothemoonifshetookthenotion,I’venodoubt”wasMarilla’samiablerejoinder.“ImighthaveletherspendthenightwithDiana,ifthatwasall.ButIdon’tapproveofthisconcertplan.
