           “She’llstayinherroomuntilsheconfesses,”saidMarillagrimly,rememberingthesuccessofthismethodintheformercase.“Thenwe’llsee.Perhapswe’llbeabletofindthebroochifshe’llonlytellwhereshetookit;butinanycaseshe’llhavetobeseverelypunished,Matthew.”

           “Wellnow,you’llhavetopunishher,”saidMatthew,reachingforhishat.“I’venothingtodowithit,remember.Youwarnedmeoffyourself.”

           Marillafeltdesertedbyeveryone.ShecouldnotevengotoMrs.Lyndeforadvice.Shewentuptotheeastgablewithaveryseriousfaceandleftitwithafacemoreseriousstill.Annesteadfastlyrefusedtoconfess.Shepersistedinassertingthatshehadnottakenthebrooch.ThechildhadevidentlybeencryingandMarillafeltapangofpitywhichshesternlyrepressed.Bynightshewas,assheexpressedit,“beatout.”

           “You’llstayinthisroomuntilyouconfess,Anne.Youcanmakeupyourmindtothat,”shesaidfirmly.

           “Butthepicnicistomorrow,Marilla,”criedAnne.
