           “You’llnotgotopicnicsnoranywhereelseuntilyou’veconfessed,Anne.”

           “Oh,Marilla,”gaspedAnne.

           ButMarillahadgoneoutandshutthedoor.

           Wednesdaymorningdawnedasbrightandfairasifexpresslymadetoorderforthepicnic.BirdssangaroundGreenGables;theMadonnaliliesinthegardensentoutwhiffsofperfumethatenteredinonviewlesswindsateverydoorandwindow,andwanderedthroughhallsandroomslikespiritsofbenediction.ThebirchesinthehollowwavedjoyfulhandsasifwatchingforAnne’susualmorninggreetingfromtheeastgable.ButAnnewasnotatherwindow.WhenMarillatookherbreakfastuptohershefoundthechildsittingprimlyonherbed,paleandresolute,withtight-shutlipsandgleamingeyes.

           “Marilla,I’mreadytoconfess.”

           “Ah!”Marillalaiddownhertray.Onceagainhermethodhadsucceeded;buthersuccesswasverybittertoher.“Letmehearwhatyouhavetosaythen,Anne.”

           “Itooktheamethystbrooch,”saidAnne,asifrepeatingalessonshehadlearned.“Itookitjustasyousaid.Ididn’tmeantotakeitwhenIwentin.Butitdidlooksobeautiful,Marilla,whenIpinneditonmybreastthatIwasovercomebyanirresistibletemptation.IimaginedhowperfectlythrillingitwouldbetotakeittoIdlewildandplayIwastheLadyCordeliaFitzgerald.
