           Marillawenttoherroomatintervalsallthroughtheeveningandsearchedforthebrooch,withoutfindingit.Abedtimevisittotheeastgableproducednoresult.AnnepersistedindenyingthatsheknewanythingaboutthebroochbutMarillawasonlythemorefirmlyconvincedthatshedid.

           ShetoldMatthewthestorythenextmorning.Matthewwasconfoundedandpuzzled;hecouldnotsoquicklylosefaithinAnnebuthehadtoadmitthatcircumstanceswereagainsther.
