Weshallseewhethertherewasanyroomfordoubtthattheadventuresofthisheroofromancewereimaginary.Butindeed,amongthemultitudeofPoe’sreaders,wasthereeverone,withthesoleexceptionofLenGuy,whobelievedthemtobereal?Thestoryistoldbytheprincipalpersonage.ArthurPymstatesintheprefacethatonhisreturnfromhisvoyagetotheAntarcticseashemet,amongtheVirginiangentlemenwhotookaninterestingeographicaldiscoveries,EdgarPoe,whowastheneditoroftheSouthernLiteraryMessengeratRichmond,andthatheauthorizedthelattertopublishthefirstpartofhisadventuresinthatjournal“underthecloakoffiction.”Thatportionhavingbeenfavourablyreceived,avolumecontainingthecompletenarrativewasissuedwiththesignatureofEdgarPoe.
ArthurGordonPymwasbornatNantucket,whereheattendedtheBedfordSchooluntilhewassixteenyearsold.HavingleftthatschoolforMr.Ronald’s,heformedafriendshipwithoneAugustusBarnard,thesonofaship’scaptain.Thisyouth,whowaseighteen,hadalreadyaccompaniedhisfatheronawhalingexpeditioninthesouthernseas,andhisyarnsconcerningthatmaritimeadventurefiredtheimaginationofArthurPym.
