           Howcarelesstheyhadbeenoffoodthen,whatprodigalwaste!Rolls,cornmuffins,biscuitsandwaffles,drippingbutter,allatonemeal.Hamatoneendofthetableandfriedchickenattheother,collardsswimmingrichlyinpotliquoriridescentwithgrease,snapbeansinmountainsonbrightlyfloweredporcelain,friedsquash,stewedokra,carrotsincreamsaucethickenoughtocut.Andthreedesserts,soeveryonemighthavehischoice,chocolatelayercake,vanillablancmangeandpoundcaketoppedwithsweetwhippedcream.Thememoryofthosesavorymealshadthepowertobringtearstohereyesasdeathandwarhadfailedtodo,andthepowertoturnherever-gnawingstomachfromrumblingemptinesstonausea.
