           Oh,thatdarkroadwheremenwentbylikeghosts,voicesstilled,onlythemuffledtrampingoffeetonsoftdirt,thefaintclickingofbridlesandthestrainingcreakofleather!And,oh,thatdreadfulmomentwhenthesickhorsebalkedandcavalryandlightcannonrumbledpastinthedarkness,pastwheretheysatbreathless,socloseshecouldalmostreachoutandtouchthem,socloseshecouldsmellthestalesweatonthesoldiers’bodies!

           When,atlast,theyhadnearedRoughandReady,afewcampfiresweregleamingwherethelastofSteveLee’srearguardwasawaitingorderstofallback.Shehadcircledthroughaplowedfieldforamileuntilthelightofthefiresdiedoutbehindher.Andthenshehadlostherwayinthedarknessandsobbedwhenshecouldnotfindthelittlewagonpathsheknewsowell.Thenfinallyhavingfoundit,thehorsesankinthetracesandrefusedtomove,refusedtoriseevenwhensheandPrissytuggedatthebridle.

           Soshehadunharnessedhimandcrawled,soddenwithfatigue,intothebackofthewagonandstretchedherachinglegs.ShehadafaintmemoryofMelanie’svoicebeforesleepclampeddownhereyelids,aweakvoicethatapologizedevenasitbegged:"Scarlett,canIhavesomewater,please?"

           Shehadsaid:"Thereisn’tany,"andgonetosleepbeforethewordswereoutofhermouth.

           Nowitwasmorningandtheworldwasstillandsereneandgreenandgoldwithdappledsunshine.Andnosoldiersinsightanywhere.
