ThepeoplewhosettledthetowncalledsuccessivelyTerminus,MarthasvilleandAtlanta,wereapushypeople.Restless,energeticpeoplefromtheoldersectionsofGeorgiaandfrommoredistantstatesweredrawntothistownthatsprawleditselfaroundthejunctionoftherailroadsinitscenter.Theycamewithenthusiasm.Theybuilttheirstoresaroundthefivemuddyredroadsthatcrossednearthedepot.TheybuilttheirfinehomesonWhitehallandWashingtonstreetsandalongthehighridgeoflandonwhichcountlessgenerationsofmoccasinedIndianfeethadbeatenapathcalledthePeachtreeTrail.Theywereproudoftheplace,proudofitsgrowth,proudofthemselvesformakingitgrow.LettheoldertownscallAtlantaanythingtheypleased.Atlantadidnotcare.
ScarletthadalwayslikedAtlantafortheverysamereasonsthatmadeSavannah,AugustaandMaconcondemnit.Likeherself,thetownwasamixtureoftheoldandnewinGeorgia,inwhichtheoldoftencameoffsecondbestinitsconflictswiththeself-willedandvigorousnew.Moreover,therewassomethingpersonal,excitingaboutatownthatwasborn—oratleastchristened—thesameyearshewaschristened.
