           Thedestinationoftheproposedrailroad,TennesseeandtheWest,wasclearanddefinite,butitsbeginningpointinGeorgiawassomewhatuncertainuntil,ayearlater,anengineerdroveastakeintheredclaytomarkthesouthernendoftheline,andAtlanta,bornTerminus,hadbegun.

           TherewerenorailroadstheninnorthGeorgia,andveryfewanywhereelse.ButduringtheyearsbeforeGeraldmarriedEllen,thetinysettlement,twenty-fivemilesnorthofTara,slowlygrewintoavillageandthetracksslowlypushednorthward.Thentherailroadbuildingerareallybegan.FromtheoldcityofAugusta,asecondrailroadwasextendedwestwardacrossthestatetoconnectwiththenewroadtoTennessee.FromtheoldcityofSavannah,athirdrailroadwasbuiltfirsttoMacon,intheheartofGeorgia,andthennorththroughGerald’sowncountytoAtlanta,tolinkupwiththeothertworoadsandgiveSavannah’sharborahighwaytotheWest.Fromthesamejunctionpoint,theyoungAtlanta,afourthrailroadwasconstructedsouthwestwardtoMontgomeryandMobile.

           Bornofarailroad,Atlantagrewasitsrailroadsgrew.Withthecompletionofthefourlines,AtlantawasnowconnectedwiththeWest,withtheSouth,withtheCoastand,throughAugusta,withtheNorthandEast.Ithadbecomethecrossroadsoftravelnorthandsouthandeastandwest,andthelittlevillageleapedtolife.

           InaspaceoftimebutlittlelongerthanScarlett’sseventeenyears,Atlantahadgrownfromasinglestakedriveninthegroundintoathrivingsmallcityoftenthousandthatwasthecenterofattentionforthewholestate.Theolder,quietercitieswerewonttolookuponthebustlingnewtownwiththesensationsofahenwhichhashatchedaduckling.WhywastheplacesodifferentfromtheotherGeorgiatowns?Whydiditgrowsofast?Afterall,theythought,ithadnothingwhatevertorecommenditonlyitsrailroadsandabunchofmightypushypeople.
