           AgainIranafterhim,andagainheranintothecave;butthistimeIstoppedatthemouth.Idroppedbackashortdistanceandwatched.Hedidnotcomeout,yet,asbefore,hechuckledatmyelbowandwaschasedbymeathirdtimeintothecave.

           Allafternoon,withoccasionalintervals,wekeptitup,andaplayful,friendlyspiritarosebetweenus.Intheend,hedidnotrunawayfromme,andwesattogetherwithourarmsaroundeachother.Alittlelaterhedisclosedthemysteryofthewide-mouthedcave.Holdingmebythehandheledmeinside.Itconnectedbyanarrowcrevicewithanothercave,anditwasthroughthisthatweregainedtheopenair.

           Wewerenowgoodfriends.Whentheotheryoungonesgatheredaroundtotease,hejoinedwithmeinattackingthem;andsoviciouslydidwebehavethatbeforelongIwasletalone.Lop-Earmademeacquaintedwiththevillage.Therewaslittlethathecouldtellmeofconditionsandcustoms—hehadnotthenecessaryvocabulary;butbyobservinghisactionsIlearnedmuch,andalsoheshowedmeplacesandthings.
