Therewasnowarning.Onthesudden,boththeHairlessOneandmysistersprangandscreamed.AtthesameinstantIheardthethudofthearrowsthattransfixedthem.Thenextinstanttheyweredownontheground,flounderingandgasping,andtherestofuswerestampedingforthetrees.Anarrowdrovepastmeandenteredtheground,itsfeatheredshaftvibratingandoscillatingfromtheimpactofitsarrestedflight.IrememberclearlyhowIswervedasIran,togopastit,andthatIgaveitaneedlesslywideberth.Imusthaveshiedatitasahorseshiesatanobjectitfears.
