           Thedoorwasasbeforeopenedatinycrack,andagaintwosharpandsuspiciouseyesstaredathimoutofthedarkness.ThenRaskolnikovlosthisheadandnearlymadeagreatmistake.

           Fearingtheoldwomanwouldbefrightenedbytheirbeingalone,andnothopingthatthesightofhimwoulddisarmhersuspicions,hetookholdofthedooranddrewittowardshimtopreventtheoldwomanfromattemptingtoshutitagain.Seeingthisshedidnotpullthedoorback,butshedidnotletgothehandlesothathealmostdraggedheroutwithitontothestairs.Seeingthatshewasstandinginthedoorwaynotallowinghimtopass,headvancedstraightuponher.Shesteppedbackinalarm,triedtosaysomething,butseemedunabletospeakandstaredwithopeneyesathim.

           “Goodevening,AlyonaIvanovna,”hebegan,tryingtospeakeasily,buthisvoicewouldnotobeyhim,itbrokeandshook.“Ihavecome...Ihavebroughtsomething...butwe’dbettercomein...tothelight....”
