           AndwhenIreturned,sometimesagooddealtired,andnotalittleweather-beaten,Ineverdaredcomplain,becauseIsawthattomurmurwouldbetovexhim: onalloccasionsfortitudepleasedhim;thereversewasaspecialannoyance. 

           Oneafternoon,however,Igotleavetostayathome,becauseIreallyhadacold. HissistersweregonetoMortoninmystead:IsatreadingSchiller;he,decipheringhiscrabbedOrientalscrolls. AsIexchangedatranslationforanexercise,Ihappenedtolookhisway:thereIfoundmyselfundertheinfluenceoftheever-watchfulblueeye. Howlongithadbeensearchingmethroughandthrough,andoverandover,Icannottell:sokeenwasit,andyetsocold,IfeltforthemomentsuperstitiousasifIweresittingintheroomwithsomethinguncanny. 

           "Jane,whatareyoudoing?" 

           "LearningGerman." 

           "IwantyoutogiveupGermanandlearnHindostanee." 

           "Youarenotinearnest?" 

           "InsuchearnestthatImusthaveitso:andIwilltellyouwhy." 

           HethenwentontoexplainthatHindostaneewasthelanguagehewashimselfatpresentstudying;that,asheadvanced,hewasapttoforgetthecommencement;thatitwouldassisthimgreatlytohaveapupilwithwhomhemightagainandagaingoovertheelements,andsofixthemthoroughlyinhismind; thathischoicehadhoveredforsometimebetweenmeandhissisters;butthathehadfixedonmebecausehesawIcouldsitatataskthelongestofthethree.
