Abovetwentyofthosecladinthiscostumewerefull-growngirls,orratheryoungwomen; itsuitedthemill,andgaveanairofoddityeventotheprettiest.
Iwasstilllookingatthem,andalsoatintervalsexaminingtheteachers—noneofwhompreciselypleasedme;forthestoutonewasalittlecoarse,thedarkonenotalittlefierce,theforeignerharshandgrotesque,andMissMiller,poorthing!lookedpurple,weather-beaten,andover-worked —when,asmyeyewanderedfromfacetoface,thewholeschoolrosesimultaneously,asifmovedbyacommonspring.
Whatwasthematter?Ihadheardnoordergiven:Iwaspuzzled. EreIhadgatheredmywits,theclasseswereagainseated:butasalleyeswerenowturnedtoonepoint,minefollowedthegeneraldirection,andencounteredthepersonagewhohadreceivedmelastnight.
