           IexplainedtoherthatIhadnoparents. Sheinquiredhowlongtheyhadbeendead:thenhowoldIwas,whatwasmyname,whetherIcouldread,write,andsewalittle:thenshetouchedmycheekgentlywithherforefinger,andsaying,"ShehopedIshouldbeagoodchild,"dismissedmealongwithMissMiller. 

           TheladyIhadleftmightbeabouttwenty-nine;theonewhowentwithmeappearedsomeyearsyounger:thefirstimpressedmebyhervoice,look,andair. MissMillerwasmoreordinary;ruddyincomplexion,thoughofacareworncountenance;hurriedingaitandaction,likeonewhohadalwaysamultiplicityoftasksonhand:shelooked,indeed,whatIafterwardsfoundshereallywas,anunder-teacher. Ledbyher,Ipassedfromcompartmenttocompartment,frompassagetopassage,ofalargeandirregularbuilding;till,emergingfromthetotalandsomewhatdrearysilencepervadingthatportionofthehousewehadtraversed,wecameuponthehumofmanyvoices,andpresentlyenteredawide,longroom,withgreatdealtables,twoateachend,oneachofwhichburntapairofcandles,andseatedallroundonbenches,acongregationofgirlsofeveryage,fromnineortentotwenty.
