Thetallgirlswentoutandreturnedpresently,eachbearingatray,withportionsofsomething,Iknewnotwhat,arrangedthereon,andapitcherofwaterandmuginthemiddleofeachtray. Theportionswerehandedround;thosewholikedtookadraughtofthewater,themugbeingcommontoall. Whenitcametomyturn,Idrank,forIwasthirsty,butdidnottouchthefood,excitementandfatiguerenderingmeincapableofeating:Inowsaw,however,thatitwasathinoatencakeshavedintofragments.
Themealover,prayerswerereadbyMissMiller,andtheclassesfiledoff,twoandtwo,upstairs. Overpoweredbythistimewithweariness,Iscarcelynoticedwhatsortofaplacethebedroomwas,exceptthat,liketheschoolroom,Isawitwasverylong. To-nightIwastobeMissMiller’sbed-fellow;shehelpedmetoundress: whenlaiddownIglancedatthelongrowsofbeds,eachofwhichwasquicklyfilledwithtwooccupants;intenminutesthesinglelightwasextinguished,andamidstsilenceandcompletedarknessIfellasleep.
