           "Mr.Rochester!"Iexclaimed."Whoishe?" 

           "TheownerofThornfield,"sherespondedquietly."DidyounotknowhewascalledRochester?" 

           OfcourseIdidnotIhadneverheardofhimbefore; buttheoldladyseemedtoregardhisexistenceasauniversallyunderstoodfact,withwhicheverybodymustbeacquaintedbyinstinct. 

           "Ithought,"Icontinued,"Thornfieldbelongedtoyou."
