TheharshintervalsandshrilldiscordsofbarbaricmusicstirredhimattimeswhenSchubert’sgrace, andChopin’sbeautifulsorrows,andthemightyharmoniesofBeethovenhimself,fellunheededonhisear. Hecollectedtogetherfromallpartsoftheworldthestrangestinstrumentsthatcouldbefound,eitherinthetombsofdeadnations oramongthefewsavagetribesthathavesurvivedcontactwithWesterncivilisations,andlovedtotouchandtrythem.
