Yes:therewastobe,asLordHenryhadprophesied,anewHedonism thatwastorecreatelife,andtosaveitfromthatharsh,uncomelypuritanismthatishaving,inourownday,itscuriousrevival. Itwastohaveitsserviceoftheintellect,certainly; yet,itwasnevertoacceptanytheoryorsystemthatwouldinvolvethesacrificeofanymodeofpassionateexperience. Itsaim,indeed,wastobeexperienceitself,andnotthefruitsofexperience,sweetorbitterastheymightbe. Oftheasceticismthatdeadensthesenses,asofthevulgarprofligacythatdullsthem,itwastoknownothing. Butitwastoteachmantoconcentratehimselfuponthemomentsofalifethatisitselfbutamoment.
