Ablackfrownsettleddownuponthehermit’sface,andheclenchedhisbonyhandswithavindictiveenergy.Hestoodafewmoments,breathingfastandswallowingrepeatedly,thensaidinahuskyvoice—
"Dostknowitwashethatturnedusoutintotheworldhouselessandhomeless?"
Therewasnoresponse.Theoldmanbentdownandscannedtheboy’sreposefulfaceandlistenedtohisplacidbreathing."Hesleeps—sleepssoundly;"andthefrownvanishedawayandgaveplacetoanexpressionofevilsatisfaction.Asmileflittedacrossthedreamingboy’sfeatures.Thehermitmuttered,"So—hisheartishappy;"andheturnedaway.
