           AssoonasMilesHendonandthelittleprincewereclearofthemob,theystruckdownthroughbacklanesandalleystowardtheriver.TheirwaywasunobstructeduntiltheyapproachedLondonBridge;thentheyploughedintothemultitudeagain,HendonkeepingafastgripuponthePrince’sno,theKing’swrist.Thetremendousnewswasalreadyabroad,andtheboylearneditfromathousandvoicesatonce"TheKingisdead!"Thetidingsstruckachilltotheheartofthepoorlittlewaif,andsentashudderthroughhisframe.Herealisedthegreatnessofhisloss,andwasfilledwithabittergrief;forthegrimtyrantwhohadbeensuchaterrortoothershadalwaysbeengentlewithhim.Thetearssprangtohiseyesandblurredallobjects.Foraninstanthefelthimselfthemostforlorn,outcast,andforsakenofGod’screaturesthenanothercryshookthenightwithitsfar-reachingthunders:"LongliveKingEdwardtheSixth!"andthismadehiseyeskindle,andthrilledhimwithpridetohisfingers’ends."Ah,"hethought,"howgrandandstrangeitseemsIamKing!"

           

           Ourfriendsthreadedtheirwayslowlythroughthethrongsuponthebridge.Thisstructure,whichhadstoodforsixhundredyears,andhadbeenanoisyandpopulousthoroughfareallthattime,wasacuriousaffair,foracloselypackedrankofstoresandshops,withfamilyquartersoverhead,stretchedalongbothsidesofit,fromonebankoftherivertotheother.
