           Elizabethhonouredhimforsuchfeelings,andthoughthimhandsomerthaneverasheexpressedthem. 

           "Butwhat,"saidshe,afterapause,"canhavebeenhismotive? Whatcanhaveinducedhimtobehavesocruelly?" 

           "Athorough,determineddislikeofmeadislikewhichIcannotbutattributeinsomemeasuretojealousy. HadthelateMr.Darcylikedmeless,hissonmighthavebornewithmebetter; buthisfather’suncommonattachmenttomeirritatedhim,Ibelieve,veryearlyinlife. Hehadnotatempertobearthesortofcompetitioninwhichwestoodthesortofpreferencewhichwasoftengivenme." 

           "IhadnotthoughtMr.DarcysobadasthisthoughIhaveneverlikedhim. Ihadnotthoughtsoveryillofhim. Ihadsupposedhimtobedespisinghisfellow-creaturesingeneral,butdidnotsuspecthimofdescendingtosuchmaliciousrevenge,suchinjustice,suchinhumanityasthis." 

           Afterafewminutes’reflection,however,shecontinued, "Idorememberhisboastingoneday,atNetherfield,oftheimplacabilityofhisresentments,ofhishavinganunforgivingtemper. Hisdispositionmustbedreadful." 

           "Iwillnottrustmyselfonthesubject,"repliedWickham; "Icanhardlybejusttohim." 

           Elizabethwasagaindeepinthought,andafteratimeexclaimed, "Totreatinsuchamannerthegodson,thefriend,thefavouriteofhisfather!" Shecouldhaveadded, "Ayoungman,too,likeyou,whoseverycountenancemayvouchforyourbeingamiable"butshecontentedherselfwith,"andone,too,whohadprobablybeenhiscompanionfromchildhood,connectedtogether,asIthinkyousaid,intheclosestmanner!"
