           Whatatriumphforhim,assheoftenthought,couldheknowthattheproposalswhichshehadproudlyspurnedonlyfourmonthsago,wouldnowhavebeenmostgladlyandgratefullyreceived! Hewasasgenerous,shedoubtednot,asthemostgenerousofhissex; butwhilehewasmortal,theremustbeatriumph. 

           Shebegannowtocomprehendthathewasexactlythemanwho,indispositionandtalents,wouldmostsuither. Hisunderstandingandtemper,thoughunlikeherown,wouldhaveansweredallherwishes. Itwasanunionthatmusthavebeentotheadvantageofboth; byhereaseandliveliness,hismindmighthavebeensoftened,hismannersimproved; andfromhisjudgement,information,andknowledgeoftheworld,shemusthavereceivedbenefitofgreaterimportance. 

           Butnosuchhappymarriagecouldnowteachtheadmiringmultitudewhatconnubialfelicityreallywas. Anunionofadifferenttendency,andprecludingthepossibilityoftheother,wassoontobeformedintheirfamily. 

           HowWickhamandLydiaweretobesupportedintolerableindependence,shecouldnotimagine. Buthowlittleofpermanenthappinesscouldbelongtoacouplewhowereonlybroughttogetherbecausetheirpassionswerestrongerthantheirvirtue,shecouldeasilyconjecture. 

           Mr.Gardinersoonwroteagaintohisbrother. ToMr.Bennet’sacknowledgmentshebrieflyreplied,withassuranceofhiseagernesstopromotethewelfareofanyofhisfamily;andconcludedwithentreatiesthatthesubjectmightneverbementionedtohimagain. TheprincipalpurportofhisletterwastoinformthemthatMr.Wickhamhadresolvedonquittingthemilitia.
