           Elizabethwasatnolosstounderstandfromwhencethisdeferencetoherauthorityproceeded; butitwasnotinherpowertogiveanyinformationofsosatisfactoryanatureasthecomplimentdeserved. Shehadneverheardofhishavinghadanyrelations,exceptafatherandmother,bothofwhomhadbeendeadmanyyears. Itwaspossible,however,thatsomeofhiscompanionsintheshiremightbeabletogivemoreinformation; andthoughshewasnotverysanguineinexpectingit,theapplicationwasasomethingtolookforwardto. 

           EverydayatLongbournwasnowadayofanxiety; butthemostanxiouspartofeachwaswhenthepostwasexpected. Thearrivalofletterswasthegrandobjectofeverymorning’simpatience. Throughletters,whateverofgoodorbadwastobetoldwouldbecommunicated,andeverysucceedingdaywasexpectedtobringsomenewsofimportance. 

           ButbeforetheyheardagainfromMr.Gardiner,aletterarrivedfortheirfather,fromadifferentquarter,fromMr.Collins; which,asJanehadreceiveddirectionstoopenallthatcameforhiminhisabsence,sheaccordinglyread; andElizabeth,whoknewwhatcuriositieshislettersalwayswere,lookedoverher,andreaditlikewise. Itwasasfollows: 

           "MyDearSir, 

           "Ifeelmyselfcalledupon,byourrelationship,andmysituationinlife,tocondolewithyouonthegrievousafflictionyouarenowsufferingunder,ofwhichwewereyesterdayinformedbyaletterfromHertfordshire. Beassured,mydearsir,thatMrs.Collinsandmyselfsincerelysympathisewithyouandallyourrespectablefamily,inyourpresentdistress,whichmustbeofthebitterestkind,becauseproceedingfromacausewhichnotimecanremove.
