           Thefacesofboth,however,weretolerablycalm; andnochangewasvisibleineither,exceptthatthelossofherfavouritesister,ortheangerwhichshehadherselfincurredinthisbusiness,hadgivenmoreoffretfulnessthanusualtotheaccentsofKitty. AsforMary,shewasmistressenoughofherselftowhispertoElizabeth,withacountenanceofgravereflection,soonaftertheywereseatedattable: 

           "Thisisamostunfortunateaffair,andwillprobablybemuchtalkedof. Butwemuststemthetideofmalice,andpourintothewoundedbosomsofeachotherthebalmofsisterlyconsolation." 

           Then,perceivinginElizabethnoinclinationofreplying,sheadded, "UnhappyastheeventmustbeforLydia,wemaydrawfromitthisusefullesson: thatlossofvirtueinafemaleisirretrievable;thatonefalsestepinvolvesherinendlessruin;thatherreputationisnolessbrittlethanitisbeautiful; andthatshecannotbetoomuchguardedinherbehaviourtowardstheundeservingoftheothersex." 

           Elizabethlifteduphereyesinamazement,butwastoomuchoppressedtomakeanyreply. Mary,however,continuedtoconsoleherselfwithsuchkindofmoralextractionsfromtheevilbeforethem. 

           Intheafternoon,thetwoelderMissBennetswereabletobeforhalf-an-hourbythemselves; andElizabethinstantlyavailedherselfoftheopportunityofmakinganyinquiries,whichJanewasequallyeagertosatisfy. Afterjoiningingenerallamentationsoverthedreadfulsequelofthisevent,whichElizabethconsideredasallbutcertain,andMissBennetcouldnotasserttobewhollyimpossible,theformercontinuedthesubject,bysaying, "ButtellmeallandeverythingaboutitwhichIhavenotalreadyheard.
