           Shelostallconcernforhiminfindingherselfthusselectedastheobjectofsuchidleandfrivolousgallantry; andwhileshesteadilyrepressedit,couldnotbutfeelthereproofcontainedinhisbelieving,thathoweverlong,andforwhatevercause,hisattentionshadbeenwithdrawn,hervanitywouldbegratified,andherpreferencesecuredatanytimebytheirrenewal. 

           Ontheverylastdayoftheregiment’sremainingatMeryton,hedined,withotheroftheofficers,atLongbourn; andsolittlewasElizabethdisposedtopartfromhimingoodhumour,thatonhismakingsomeinquiryastothemannerinwhichhertimehadpassedatHunsford,shementionedColonelFitzwilliam’sandMr.Darcy’shavingbothspentthreeweeksatRosings,andaskedhim,ifhewasacquaintedwiththeformer. 

           Helookedsurprised,displeased,alarmed; butwithamoment’srecollectionandareturningsmile,replied,thathehadformerlyseenhimoften; and,afterobservingthathewasaverygentlemanlikeman,askedherhowshehadlikedhim. Heranswerwaswarmlyinhisfavour. Withanairofindifferencehesoonafterwardsadded: 

           "HowlongdidyousayhewasatRosings?" 

           "Nearlythreeweeks." 

           "Andyousawhimfrequently?" 

           "Yes,almosteveryday." 

           "Hismannersareverydifferentfromhiscousin’s." 

           "Yes,verydifferent. ButIthinkMr.Darcyimprovesuponacquaintance." 

           "Indeed!"criedMr.Wickhamwithalookwhichdidnotescapeher. "Andpray,mayIask?"Butcheckinghimself,headded,inagayertone,"Isitinaddressthatheimproves?
