"Mr.Wickhamisthesonofaveryrespectableman,whohadformanyyearsthemanagementofallthePemberleyestates,andwhosegoodconductinthedischargeofhistrustnaturallyinclinedmyfathertobeofservicetohim; andonGeorgeWickham,whowashisgodson,hiskindnesswasthereforeliberallybestowed. Myfathersupportedhimatschool,andafterwardsatCambridge—mostimportantassistance,ashisownfather,alwayspoorfromtheextravaganceofhiswife,wouldhavebeenunabletogivehimagentleman’seducation. Myfatherwasnotonlyfondofthisyoungman’ssociety,whosemannerwerealwaysengaging;hehadalsothehighestopinionofhim,andhopingthechurchwouldbehisprofession,intendedtoprovideforhiminit. Asformyself,itismany,manyyearssinceIfirstbegantothinkofhiminaverydifferentmanner. Theviciouspropensities—thewantofprinciple,whichhewascarefultoguardfromtheknowledgeofhisbestfriend,couldnotescapetheobservationofayoungmanofnearlythesameagewithhimself,andwhohadopportunitiesofseeinghiminunguardedmoments,whichMr.Darcycouldnothave. Hereagainshallgiveyoupain—towhatdegreeyouonlycantell. ButwhatevermaybethesentimentswhichMr.Wickhamhascreated,asuspicionoftheirnatureshallnotpreventmefromunfoldinghisrealcharacter—itaddsevenanothermotive.
"Myexcellentfatherdiedaboutfiveyearsago; andhisattachmenttoMr.Wickhamwastothelastsosteady,thatinhiswillheparticularlyrecommendedittome,topromotehisadvancementinthebestmannerthathisprofessionmightallow—andifhetookorders,desiredthatavaluablefamilylivingmightbehisassoonasitbecamevacant. Therewasalsoalegacyofonethousandpounds. Hisownfatherdidnotlongsurvivemine,andwithinhalfayearfromtheseevents,Mr.Wickhamwrotetoinformmethat,havingfinallyresolvedagainsttakingorders, hehopedIshouldnotthinkitunreasonableforhimtoexpectsomemoreimmediatepecuniaryadvantage,inlieuofthepreferment,bywhichhecouldnotbebenefited.
