           Whencoffeewasover,ColonelFitzwilliamremindedElizabethofhavingpromisedtoplaytohim;andshesatdowndirectlytotheinstrument. Hedrewachairnearher. LadyCatherinelistenedtohalfasong,andthentalked,asbefore,toherothernephew;tillthelatterwalkedawayfromher,andmakingwithhisusualdeliberationtowardsthepianofortestationedhimselfsoastocommandafullviewofthefairperformer’scountenance. Elizabethsawwhathewasdoing,andatthefirstconvenientpause,turnedtohimwithanarchsmile,andsaid: 

           "Youmeantofrightenme,Mr.Darcy,bycominginallthisstatetohearme? Iwillnotbealarmedthoughyoursisterdoesplaysowell. Thereisastubbornnessaboutmethatnevercanbeartobefrightenedatthewillofothers. Mycouragealwaysrisesateveryattempttointimidateme." 

           "Ishallnotsayyouaremistaken,"hereplied,"becauseyoucouldnotreallybelievemetoentertainanydesignofalarmingyou; andIhavehadthepleasureofyouracquaintancelongenoughtoknowthatyoufindgreatenjoymentinoccasionallyprofessingopinionswhichinfactarenotyourown."
