Mrs.GardineraboutthistimeremindedElizabethofherpromiseconcerningthatgentleman,andrequiredinformation;andElizabethhadsuchtosendasmightrathergivecontentmenttoherauntthantoherself. Hisapparentpartialityhadsubsided,hisattentionswereover,hewastheadmirerofsomeoneelse. Elizabethwaswatchfulenoughtoseeitall,butshecouldseeitandwriteofitwithoutmaterialpain. Thesuddenacquisitionoftenthousandpoundswasthemostremarkablecharmoftheyoungladytowhomhewasnowrenderinghimselfagreeable; butElizabeth,lessclear-sightedperhapsinthiscasethaninCharlotte’s,didnotquarrelwithhimforhiswishofindependence. Nothing,onthecontrary,couldbemorenatural; andwhileabletosupposethatitcosthimafewstruggletorelinquishher,shewasreadytoallowitawiseanddesirablemeasureforboth,andcouldverysincerelywishhimhappy.
