"Indeed,Mr.Collins,allpraiseofmewillbeunnecessary. Youmustgivemeleavetojudgeformyself,andpaymethecomplimentofbelievingwhatIsay. Iwishyouveryhappyandveryrich,andbyrefusingyouhand,doallinmypowertopreventyourbeingotherwise. Inmakingmetheoffer,youmusthavesatisfiedthedelicacyofyourfeelingswithregardtomyfamily,andmaytakepossessionofLongbournestatewheneveritfalls,withoutanyself-reproach. Thismattermaybeconsidered,therefore,asfinallysettled." Andrisingasshethusspoke,shewouldhavequittedtheroom,hadMr.Collinsnotthusaddressedher:
"WhenIdomyselfthehonourofspeakingtoyounextonthesubject,Ishallhopetoreceiveamorefavourableanswerthanyouhavenowgivenme; thoughIamfarfromaccusingyouofcrueltyatpresent,becauseIknowittobetheestablishedcustomofyoursextorejectamanonthefirstapplication,andperhapsyouhaveevennowsaidasmuchtoencouragemysuitaswouldbeconsistentwiththetruedelicacyofthefemalecharacter."
"Really,Mr.Collins,"criedElizabethwithsomewarmth,"youpuzzlemeexceedingly. IfwhatIhavehithertosaidcanappeartoyouintheformofencouragement,Iknownothowtoexpressmyrefusalinsuchawayastoconvinceyouofitsbeingone."
