Itistobeobserved,thattheseambassadorsspoketome,byaninterpreter,thelanguagesofbothempiresdifferingasmuchfromeachotherasanytwoinEurope,andeachnationpridingitselfupontheantiquity,beauty,andenergyoftheirowntongue,withanavowedcontemptforthatoftheirneighbour;yetouremperor,standingupontheadvantagehehadgotbytheseizureoftheirfleet,obligedthemtodelivertheircredentials,andmaketheirspeech,intheLilliputiantongue.Anditmustbeconfessed,thatfromthegreatintercourseoftradeandcommercebetweenbothrealms,fromthecontinualreceptionofexileswhichismutualamongthem,andfromthecustom,ineachempire,tosendtheiryoungnobilityandrichergentrytotheother,inordertopolishthemselvesbyseeingtheworld,andunderstandingmenandmanners;therearefewpersonsofdistinction,ormerchants,orseamen,whodwellinthemaritimeparts,butwhatcanholdconversationinbothtongues;
