           Theenemywassofrightenedwhentheysawme,thattheyleapedoutoftheirships,andswamtoshore,wheretherecouldnotbefewerthanthirtythousandsouls.Ithentookmytackling,and,fasteningahooktotheholeattheprowofeach,Itiedallthecordstogetherattheend.WhileIwasthusemployed,theenemydischargedseveralthousandarrows,manyofwhichstuckinmyhandsandface,and,besidetheexcessivesmart,gavememuchdisturbanceinmywork.Mygreatestapprehensionwasformineeyes,whichIshouldhaveinfalliblylost,ifIhadnotsuddenlythoughtofanexpedient.Ikept,amongotherlittlenecessaries,apairofspectaclesinaprivatepocket,which,asIobservedbefore,hadescapedtheemperor’ssearchers.TheseItookoutandfastenedasstronglyasIcoulduponmynose,andthusarmed,wentonboldlywithmywork,inspiteoftheenemy’sarrows,manyofwhichstruckagainsttheglassesofmyspectacles,butwithoutanyothereffect,furtherthanalittletodiscomposethem.Ihadnowfastenedallthehooks,and,takingtheknotinmyhand,begantopull;butnotashipwouldstir,fortheywerealltoofastheldbytheiranchors,sothattheboldestpartofmyenterpriseremained.Ithereforeletgothecord,andleavingthelooksfixedtotheships,Iresolutelycutwithmyknifethecablesthatfastenedtheanchors,receivingabouttwohundredshotsinmyfaceandhands;thenItookuptheknottedendofthecables,towhichmyhooksweretied,andwithgreateasedrewfiftyoftheenemy’slargestmenofwarafterme.

           TheBlefuscudians,whohadnottheleastimaginationofwhatIintended,wereatfirstconfoundedwithastonishment.Theyhadseenmecutthecables,andthoughtmydesignwasonlytolettheshipsrunadriftorfallfouloneachother:butwhentheyperceivedthewholefleetmovinginorder,andsawmepullingattheend,theysetupsuchascreamofgriefanddespairasitisalmostimpossibletodescribeorconceive.
