Butthisdescription,Iconfess,doesbynomeansaffecttheBritishnation,whomaybeanexampletothewholeworldfortheirwisdom,care,andjusticeinplantingcolonies;theirliberalendowmentsfortheadvancementofreligionandlearning;theirchoiceofdevoutandablepastorstopropagateChristianity;theircautioninstockingtheirprovinceswithpeopleofsoberlivesandconversationsfromthisthemotherkingdom;theirstrictregardtothedistributionofjustice,insupplyingtheciviladministrationthroughalltheircolonieswithofficersofthegreatestabilities,utterstrangerstocorruption;and,tocrownall,bysendingthemostvigilantandvirtuousgovernors,whohavenootherviewsthanthehappinessofthepeopleoverwhomtheypreside,andthehonourofthekingtheirmaster.
ButasthosecountrieswhichIhavedescribeddonotappeartohaveanydesireofbeingconqueredandenslaved,murderedordrivenoutbycolonies,noraboundeitheringold,silver,sugar,ortobacco,Ididhumblyconceive,theywerebynomeansproperobjectsofourzeal,ourvalour,orourinterest.
