           Theoutwardcourtisasquareoffortyfeet,andincludestwoothercourts:intheinmostaretheroyalapartments,whichIwasverydesiroustosee,butfounditextremelydifficult;forthegreatgates,fromonesquareintoanother,werebuteighteenincheshigh,andsevenincheswide.Nowthebuildingsoftheoutercourtwereatleastfivefeethigh,anditwasimpossibleformetostrideoverthemwithoutinfinitedamagetothepile,thoughthewallswerestronglybuiltofhewnstone,andfourinchesthick.AtthesametimetheemperorhadagreatdesirethatIshouldseethemagnificenceofhispalace;butthisIwasnotabletodotillthreedaysafter,whichIspentincuttingdownwithmyknifesomeofthelargesttreesintheroyalpark,aboutahundredyardsdistantfromthecity.OfthesetreesImadetwostools,eachaboutthreefeethigh,andstrongenoughtobearmyweight.Thepeoplehavingreceivednoticeasecondtime,Iwentagainthroughthecitytothepalacewithmytwostoolsinmyhands.WhenIcametothesideoftheoutercourt,Istoodupononestool,andtooktheotherinmyhand;thisIliftedovertheroof,andgentlysetitdownonthespacebetweenthefirstandsecondcourt,whichwaseightfeetwide.Ithensteptoverthebuildingveryconvenientlyfromonestooltotheother,anddrewupthefirstaftermewithahookedstick.BythiscontrivanceIgotintotheinmostcourt;and,lyingdownuponmyside,Iappliedmyfacetothewindowsofthemiddlestories,whichwereleftopenonpurpose,anddiscoveredthemostsplendidapartmentsthatcanbeimagined.ThereIsawtheempressandtheyoungprinces,intheirseverallodgings,withtheirchiefattendantsaboutthem.Herimperialmajestywaspleasedtosmileverygraciouslyuponme,andgavemeoutofthewindowherhandtokiss.
