Ineverpresumedtospeak,exceptinanswertoaquestion;andthenIdiditwithinwardregret,becauseitwasalossofsomuchtimeforimprovingmyself;butIwasinfinitelydelightedwiththestationofanhumbleauditorinsuchconversations,wherenothingpassedbutwhatwasuseful,expressedinthefewestandmostsignificantwords;where,asIhavealreadysaid,thegreatestdecencywasobserved,withouttheleastdegreeofceremony;wherenopersonspokewithoutbeingpleasedhimself,andpleasinghiscompanions;wheretherewasnointerruption,tediousness,heat,ordifferenceofsentiments.Theyhaveanotion,thatwhenpeoplearemettogether,ashortsilencedoesmuchimproveconversation:thisIfoundtobetrue;forduringthoselittleintermissionsoftalk,newideaswouldariseintheirminds,whichverymuchenlivenedthediscourse.Theirsubjectsare,generallyonfriendshipandbenevolence,onorderandeconomy;sometimesuponthevisibleoperationsofnature,orancienttraditions;upontheboundsandlimitsofvirtue;upontheunerringrulesofreason,oruponsomedeterminationstobetakenatthenextgreatassembly:andoftenuponthevariousexcellencesofpoetry.
