Forif,"saidhe,"youthrowamongfiveYahoosasmuchfoodaswouldbesufficientforfifty,theywill,insteadofeatingpeaceably,falltogetherbytheears,eachsingleoneimpatienttohavealltoitself;andthereforeaservantwasusuallyemployedtostandbywhiletheywerefeedingabroad,andthosekeptathomeweretiedatadistancefromeachother:thatifacowdiedofageoraccident,beforeaHouyhnhnmcouldsecureitforhisownYahoos,thoseintheneighbourhoodwouldcomeinherdstoseizeit,andthenwouldensuesuchabattleasIhaddescribed,withterriblewoundsmadebytheirclawsonbothsides,althoughtheyseldomwereabletokilloneanother,forwantofsuchconvenientinstrumentsofdeathaswehadinvented.Atothertimes,thelikebattleshavebeenfoughtbetweentheYahoosofseveralneighbourhoods,withoutanyvisiblecause;thoseofonedistrictwatchingallopportunitiestosurprisethenext,beforetheyareprepared.Butiftheyfindtheirprojecthasmiscarried,theyreturnhome,and,forwantofenemies,engageinwhatIcallacivilwaramongthemselves.
