"Therearethreemethods,bywhichamanmayrisetobechiefminister.Thefirstis,byknowinghow,withprudence,todisposeofawife,adaughter,orasister;thesecond,bybetrayingorundermininghispredecessor;andthethirdis,byafuriouszeal,inpublicassemblies,againstthecorruption’softhecourt.Butawiseprincewouldratherchoosetoemploythosewhopractisethelastofthesemethods;becausesuchzealotsprovealwaysthemostobsequiousandsubservienttothewillandpassionsoftheirmaster.
