Thesediversionsareoftenattendedwithfatalaccidents,whereofgreatnumbersareonrecord.Imyselfhaveseentwoorthreecandidatesbreakalimb.Butthedangerismuchgreater,whentheministersthemselvesarecommandedtoshowtheirdexterity;for,bycontendingtoexcelthemselvesandtheirfellows,theystrainsofarthatthereishardlyoneofthemwhohasnotreceivedafall,andsomeofthemtwoorthree.Iwasassuredthat,ayearortwobeforemyarrival,Flimnapwouldinfalliblyhavebrokehisneck,ifoneoftheking’scushions,thataccidentallylayontheground,hadnotweakenedtheforceofhisfall.
Thereislikewiseanotherdiversion,whichisonlyshownbeforetheemperorandempress,andfirstminister,uponparticularoccasions.Theemperorlaysonthetablethreefinesilkenthreadsofsixincheslong;oneisblue,theotherred,andthethirdgreen.Thesethreadsareproposedasprizesforthosepersonswhomtheemperorhasamindtodistinguishbyapeculiarmarkofhisfavour.Theceremonyisperformedinhismajesty’sgreatchamberofstate,wherethecandidatesaretoundergoatrialofdexterityverydifferentfromtheformer,andsuchasIhavenotobservedtheleastresemblanceofinanyothercountryoftheneworoldworld.Theemperorholdsastickinhishands,bothendsparalleltothehorizon,whilethecandidatesadvancing,onebyone,sometimesleapoverthestick,sometimescreepunderit,backwardandforward,severaltimes,accordingasthestickisadvancedordepressed.Sometimestheemperorholdsoneendofthestick,andhisfirstministertheother;sometimestheministerhasitentirelytohimself.
