           Ianswered,asIhadbeforedetermined,"thatIwasaDutchmerchant,shipwreckedinaveryremotecountry,whenceIhadtravelledbyseaandlandtoLuggnagg,andthentookshippingforJapan;whereIknewmycountrymenoftentraded,andwithsomeoftheseIhopedtogetanopportunityofreturningintoEurope:Ithereforemosthumblyentreatedhisroyalfavour,togiveorderthatIshouldbeconductedinsafetytoNangasac."TothisIaddedanotherpetition,"thatforthesakeofmypatronthekingofLuggnagg,hismajestywouldcondescendtoexcusemyperformingtheceremonyimposedonmycountrymen,oftramplinguponthecrucifix:becauseIhadbeenthrownintohiskingdombymymisfortunes,withoutanyintentionoftrading."WhenthislatterpetitionwasinterpretedtotheEmperor,heseemedalittlesurprised;andsaid,"hebelievedIwasthefirstofmycountrymenwhoevermadeanyscrupleinthispoint;andthathebegantodoubt,whetherIwasarealHollander,ornot;butrathersuspectedImustbeaChristian.However,forthereasonsIhadoffered,butchieflytogratifythekingofLuggnaggbyanuncommonmarkofhisfavour,hewouldcomplywiththesingularityofmyhumour;buttheaffairmustbemanagedwithdexterity,andhisofficersshouldbecommandedtoletmepass,asitwerebyforgetfulness.Forheassuredme,thatifthesecretshouldbediscoveredbymycountrymentheDutch,theywouldcutmythroatinthevoyage."
