Thefirstprojectwas,toshortendiscourse,bycuttingpolysyllablesintoone,andleavingoutverbsandparticiples,because,inreality,allthingsimaginablearebutnorms.
Theotherprojectwas,aschemeforentirelyabolishingallwordswhatsoever;andthiswasurgedasagreatadvantageinpointofhealth,aswellasbrevity.Foritisplain,thateverywordwespeakis,insomedegree,adiminutionofourlungebycorrosion,and,consequently,contributestotheshorteningofourlives.Anexpedientwasthereforeoffered,"thatsincewordsareonlynamesforthings,itwouldbemoreconvenientforallmentocarryaboutthemsuchthingsaswerenecessarytoexpressaparticularbusinesstheyaretodiscourseon."Andthisinventionwouldcertainlyhavetakenplace,tothegreateaseaswellashealthofthesubject,ifthewomen,inconjunctionwiththevulgarandilliterate,hadnotthreatenedtoraisearebellionunlesstheymightbeallowedthelibertytospeakwiththeirtongues,afterthemanneroftheirforefathers;suchconstantirreconcilableenemiestosciencearethecommonpeople.
