Inthesecollegestheprofessorscontrivenewrulesandmethodsofagricultureandbuilding,andnewinstruments,andtoolsforalltradesandmanufactures;whereby,astheyundertake,onemanshalldotheworkoften;apalacemaybebuiltinaweek,ofmaterialssodurableastolastforeverwithoutrepairing.Allthefruitsoftheearthshallcometomaturityatwhateverseasonwethinkfittochoose,andincreaseahundredfoldmorethantheydoatpresent;withinnumerableotherhappyproposals.Theonlyinconvenienceis,thatnoneoftheseprojectsareyetbroughttoperfection;andinthemeantime,thewholecountryliesmiserablywaste,thehousesinruins,andthepeoplewithoutfoodorclothes.Byallwhich,insteadofbeingdiscouraged,theyarefiftytimesmoreviolentlybentuponprosecutingtheirschemes,drivenequallyonbyhopeanddespair:thatasforhimself,beingnotofanenterprisingspirit,hewascontenttogoonintheoldforms,toliveinthehouseshisancestorshadbuilt,andactastheydid,ineverypartoflife,withoutinnovation:thatsomefewotherpersonsofqualityandgentryhaddonethesame,butwerelookedonwithaneyeofcontemptandill-will,asenemiestoart,ignorant,andillcommon-wealth’smen,preferringtheirowneaseandslothbeforethegeneralimprovementoftheircountry."
