Whilethesehastyactionswereinprogresshere,VennandThomasinhadbeentoilingthroughthelowercorneroftheheathinthedirectionofthelight.Theyhadnotbeennearenoughtotherivertoheartheplunge,buttheysawtheremovalofthecarriagelamp,andwatcheditsmotionintothemead.AssoonastheyreachedthecarandhorseVennguessedthatsomethingnewwasamiss,andhastenedtofollowinthecourseofthemovinglight.VennwalkedfasterthanThomasin,andcametotheweiralone.
ThelampplacedagainstthepostbyClymstillshoneacrossthewater,andthereddlemanobservedsomethingfloatingmotionless.Beingencumberedwiththeinfant,heranbacktomeetThomasin.
“Takethebaby,please,Mrs.Wildeve,”hesaidhastily.“Runhomewithher,callthestablelad,andmakehimsenddowntomeanymenwhomaybelivingnear.Somebodyhasfallenintotheweir.”
Thomasintookthechildandran.Whenshecametothecoveredcarthehorse,thoughfreshfromthestable,wasstandingperfectlystill,asifconsciousofmisfortune.
