           Atlastallwasquiet,andhehadnothingtodobuttowait.BynoeffortcouldheshakeofftheoppressionofspiritswhichhehadexperiencedeversincehislastmeetingwithEustacia,buthehopedtherewasthatinhissituationwhichmoneycouldcure.Hehadpersuadedhimselfthattoactnotungenerouslytowardshisgentlewifebysettlingonherthehalfofhisproperty,andwithchivalrousdevotiontowardsanotherandgreaterwomanbysharingherfate,waspossible.
